When is it time to replace your roof?

Posted

As with most things around your home, your roof has a lifespan, and attention needs to be given as to when it is time to replace your roof.

Here are a few things to look for when determining if it is time to replace your roof:

Curling or peeling shingles: As your shingles age and approach the end of their lifespan, they will show wear and tear. If some of your shingles are starting to appear as though they are peeling or, if they are starting to curl in the corners, they are starting to break down.

Leaks are the most obvious sign that you have an issue with your roof that will require repair or a replacement. Aside from a visible drip, stains on your ceilings are a good indicator that moisture is coming from somewhere. If you see any leaks or discoloration, you may need to contact a roofer.

You should always check your attic for signs of aging:  Using a flashlight, check to make sure that your insulation is dry. If you feel a draft or if you can see daylight coming through, you should contact a reputable contractor to help you with repairs.

Asphalt shingles are made with sand-like granules that help direct the water off the roof. Loose granules on your shingles are a sign they are aging. If you find these granules under your eaves or pooling under your downspouts, this is an indication that you may not have the protection from your roof that you need.

Missing shingles due to wind and storm damage may be a signal that your roof needs to be replaced.

There is nothing more important to the safety and security of your home than your roof. Never delay a roof replacement as leaks and damage can be extremely costly.
